Orange International Street Fair |
|
Supervisor Spitzer joins OISF Coordinator Brian Lochrie, Boy Scout Troop 241 and Scoutmaster Jim Shoffitt near the Drowning Prevention Task Force booth at the International Street Fair. |
|
Supervisor Spitzer's booth's theme was Drowning Prevention to encourage water safety. |
The annual Orange International Street Fair (OISF) kicked off Labor Day weekend in the tradition of global fun. Supervisor Todd Spitzer spoke at the opening ceremony to congratulate the OISF for holding the event for the 45th time. He emphasized the importance of the community's support of the Orange County firefighters who were sent to assist with search and rescue efforts after Hurricane Harvey.
Supervisor Spitzer had a booth at the fair to promote drowning prevention and County Government services. Visitors who stopped by were given Water-Watcher badges to clearly provide a designated water-watcher. They also had the chance to win prizes like rubber ducks that remind users to “Never Swim Alone” by answering drowning and water safety trivia questions.
The Street Fair is a fun, free event in Orange that takes visitors on a culinary trip around the world. Walking from one street to another, visitors pass vendors selling authentic foods from around the world. Smoke from the barbeques and the popping from grills enticed guests with delicious food from the European continent, Asian-inspired plates, to Pacific Island menu specials. Food ranged from the commonplace to the bizarre, while live music from stages across the fair featured Spanish-language rock-n-roll, authentic Irish jigs, and African drum beats. The fair also featured booths with one-of-a kind souvenirs and products to buy.
Supervisor Spitzer was joined at the opening ceremony by, Orange Mayor Tita Smith, Mayor Pro-Tem Mark Murphy, Orange City Council Members Fred Whitaker, Mike Alvarez, and Kim Nichols, and Miss Orange 2017 Katie Wayland, and Boy Scout Troop 241 with Scoutmaster Jim Shoffitt. |

Drowning Prevention Task Force Mock Drowning |
|
Supervisor Spitzer holds a water-watcher tag at the Drowning Prevention Task Force end-of-summer press conference to promote water safety. |
|
Just a few weeks ago, Orange County firefighters responded to 7 drowning-related calls in 24 hours. This unbelievable, but sad truth, is why Supervisor Todd Spitzer is so committed to preventing drownings in Orange County.
He joined members of the Drowning Prevention Task Force and drowning prevention advocates at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine for a press conference on the dangers of swimming alone and to stage an educational mock drowning.
Drowning can happen in seconds, so education is vital to helping end drownings in Orange County. The mock drowning is an important demonstration of just how quickly a swim alone can turn into a tragedy. Please note that our demonstration was staged by Orange County Fire Authority.
It is always important to be diligent about water safety. Always watch your children around water, designate a water-watcher at group events and think twice – bring a buddy and never swim alone.
Thanks to Tustin Mayor Pro-Tem Al Murray, Julie Lopiccolo of the Jasper Ray Foundation for Drowning Prevention and Child Safety, Irvine Mayor Don Wagner, Irvine Mayor Pro-Tem Lynn Schott, Irvine City Council Member Melissa Fox, Lauren Johnson-Norris, and Orange County Fire Authority for their continued support of this necessary cause. |
