Supervisor Todd Spitzer was pleased to attend several Veterans Day events to honor our nation’s heroes.

Current and former members of our Armed Forces were thanked for their service at the events.

“Our county is indebted to and proud of our military veterans,” Supervisor Spitzer. “Our nation has a duty to honor our veterans and their families for their sacrifice and to educate the next generation of young people that will most certainly be called on to protect liberty and democracy throughout the world. I’m proud to support our veteran community.”

Tustin Library Update

A temporary library is open in Tustin while damages are assessed on the permanent library.

In March, employees at the Tustin Branch of OC Public Libraries discovered a leak in the library’s subfloor below the bookshelves. The leak caused substantial flooding and the Library had to be temporarily closed.

The County of Orange, which operates the Tustin-owned facility, immediately began water removals and drying activities to stabilize the facility. Following the water removals, the extent of damage was unknown. A detailed water damage and repair evaluation was commissioned by the City’s insurance carrier, which involved a number of engineers and other specialists. The evaluation was completed in September 2017, identifying critical repairs needed to structural, mechanical, and electrical systems.

The City is now conducting a third-party review of the report to ensure that the repairs proposed by the insurance company will fully address all of the covered damage, and at the same time to develop construction documents for the purpose of hiring a contractor to complete the repairs.

Precise timing to start the repairs is unknown but is anticipated to begin in early 2018. An updated scheduled for repairs is anticipated in late November 2017.

It is estimated that work will begin in early 2018 and could last a few months. Once the repair contract is awarded a more concrete timeline will be known and made available.

Recognizing the permanent library would not be reopening for an extended period, the City and the County of Orange were successful in opening a Temporary Library on August 15, 2017 in an undamaged portion of the building in order to provide limited, yet critical, services to our community in the meantime.

The hours of operation are as follows:
Tuesday-Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. | Friday-Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Call the Library at (714) 544-7725 for more information.

Third District Parks Reopening after Recent Fires

Firefighters from OCFA, Anaheim Fire, Orange Fire, Tustin Fire, and other agencies spent weeks fighting the Canyon Fire 2.

Portions of Peters Canyon Regional Park are open as of November 11.

Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 the Canyon Fire 2 started near the intersection of the 91 and 241. The fire burned through Anaheim Hills and East Orange, extensively burning four County regional parks. Of the more than 9,000 acres estimated damaged in the Canyon Fire 2, the large majority are within four OC Parks regional parks: Irvine Regional Park, Santiago Oaks Regional Park, Peters Canyon Regional Park, and Irvine Ranch Open Space. Other facilities, including several regional trail segments, are also damaged.

The three trails that remain closed are around the reservoir: Lake View Trail, Skylark Trail and Cactus Point Trail. Santiago Oaks and exterior trails at Irvine Regional Park remain closed.

For your safety, please stay on the open trails only and follow all signs.

Human Trafficking Task Force Receives Grant for “Be the One” Campaign

As Co-Chair of the OC Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC) Steering Committee as part of OC Social Services Agency, Supervisor Todd Spitzer has been a leading voice on human-trafficking prevention and paved the way for the “Be the One” campaign. On September 1, 2017, the US Department of Homeland Security selected the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to receive a highly competitive grant to enhance and expand the “Be the One” campaign.

The “Be the One” campaign is a human-trafficking prevention initiative that leads Orange County’s public awareness on the warning signs of sex trafficking and encourage victims to come forward. The CSEC Steering Committee partnered with OCTA to tailor the “Be the One” campaign to focus specifically on the sex trafficking of children. Together, OCTA and CSEC promoted the campaign’s messages on OC buses across the County. While one of the main goals of the CSEC Steering Committee is to increase public awareness, they are also working collaboratively to enhance services and identify appropriate placement resources for this vulnerable population.

Supervisor Spitzer, who is also an OCTA director, congratulates OCTA for the award and is proud of their continued support of the “Be the One” Campaign.
