Measure M Keeping its Promises to Orange County
The Measure M Taxpayers Oversight Committee has determined that Measure M is being delivered as promised to Orange County voters for the 24th consecutive year.

The committee held its annual Measure M public hearing Tuesday night and unanimously found that the Orange County Transportation Authority is proceeding in accordance with the ordinances that were approved by voters first in 1990 and renewed in 2006.

The independent, 11-member oversight committee was formed to monitor OCTA’s use of Measure M funding, approve all changes to the Measure M plan and hold annual public hearings on the expenditure of funds generated by Measure M.

The original Measure M half-cent sales tax made possible more than $4 billion worth of transportation improvements. Since 1990, hundreds of local projects have been completed that help residents travel throughout the county every day. This includes improvements to every freeway, widened streets, synchronized signals and improved intersections. Measure M also made possible Metrolink commuter-rail service in Orange County.

Renewed by 70 percent of voters in 2006, Measure M is expected to generate nearly $16 billion to fund transportation improvements through 2041. Freeways will receive 43 percent of the funding, streets and roads receive 32 percent and transit receives 25 percent of M dollars. The freeway program includes funding for an environmental program that preserves and restores natural habitat and improves water quality.

Anaheim State of the City
Congratulations to Mayor Tom Tait and the entire city staff for their delivery of the annual State of the City hosted at The Grove this past week. Civic leaders and community activist enjoyed hearing the Mayor review accomplishments and performance objectives from 2014. Highlights included inviting the entire city to get involved in volunteering, mentoring and providing opportunities to Anaheim youth. Also included in comments and power-point were the successful seasons of the Anaheim Ducks and Angels Baseball, a review of the Disneyland resort embarking on their 60th anniversary of the Disneyland Park.

Net proceeds from the State of the City address raised $70,000, all of which will serve Anaheim youth through ACT Anaheim.

Black History Parade
Special thanks were extended by Supervisor Nelson to the planning and coordinating teams of the 35th annual Black History and Cultural Faire who delivered another terrific Saturday event this past weekend for 5,000 attendees in downtown Anaheim. The morning started with a parade of bands, drill teams and VIP from the county along with Mayor Tait, his wife Julie and the rest of the Anaheim City Council.

The parade chairman, Shedrick Collins, worked as host at the parking lot located at The Colony Restaurant to pull together the 92 entries who marched in the parade. Wellington Bennett, a member of the NAACP Orange County Chapter walked in this year’s parade which was produced in conjunction with the Orange County Heritage Council.

For more information on how you can sponsor or participate in this fun and family- friendly cultural gala, please call Cathy Woodward at 714 271-2251 or contact Steve Spernak at Supervisor Nelson’s office at Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com

Cigars for Heroes Update
Army Captain Shane Yates, a Chaplain for the 162nd Infantry, sent Supervisor Nelson this most recent photo of Air Force medics enjoying cigars and some down-time from operations while working emergency services for troops stationed at New Kabul, Afghanistan. The cigars are part of the 1,000 sent by Supervisor Nelson on Veteran’s Day 2014 and delivered to troops by Captain Shane Yates, an OC resident and friend of the Nelson family through the football program at Orange Lutheran HS. A reception and BBQ will be hosted at Vintage Cigars of Santa Ana in May to welcome home Captain Yates. Details to follow for those who want to help with this heroes homecoming will be published in our newsletter.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Supervisor Shawn Nelson continues his support to protect seniors and their dependents with his commitment to promote the coming World Elder Abuse Awareness Day that he will help host on Saturday, June 13, 2015 here in Orange County.

The Awareness Day program, directed by Linda Armas of the Ageless Alliance, is part of her passion and life-time commitment to help seniors with education and prevention not only in Orange County but world-wide.
