County Mourns Passing of Former Supervisor Marian Bergeson
County officials mourned the passing of former Supervisor Marian Bergeson, who was elected to represent the Fifth District on the Board of Supervisors in 1994 after a prestigious career in the state Legislature.

Mrs. Bergeson left the Board in November 1996 after being appointed by then-Gov. Pete Wilson to serve as California’s Secretary of Education. She later served on the state Board of Education and on the California Transportation Commission.

“We are profoundly saddened by the passing of such a loved and respected leader in our community,” said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, Fifth District. “We will always be grateful for the time she spent contributing her energy, optimism and intellect to help solve
problems across California.”

“She brought so much experience and insight to everything she did,” said Vice Chair Michelle Steel, Second District. “She was a true pioneer and an inspiration to many.”

Supervisor Andrew Do said her legacy will continue thanks to efforts such as the Marian Bergeson Excellence in Public Service Series, which encourages more women to serve in politics and government. “Marian Bergeson’s legacy will continue to live on through the countless number of people she has inspired to run for office and serve in government,” said Supervisor Do, who represents the First District. “For generations to come, Orange County will remember Marian Bergeson for her leadership and lifetime of service.”

Supervisor Todd Spitzer, Third District, who was elected to his first stint on the Board as Mrs.Bergeson was leaving for Sacramento, remembered her as “the smartest, classiest person and elected official I have ever met. She continued to attend most social and political events despite her years of fighting illness. She was deeply committed to her family, her husband Garth and her children. She leaves an amazing and earned legacy. We are all better off knowing and working alongside her. Rest in peace, Madame Secretary.”

“She had nearly unparalleled stature in this county for good reason,” said Supervisor Shawn Nelson, Fourth District. “She understood more than most the intricacies of local and state government and devoted her life to solving problems.”

Sea Lion deterrent pilot program – Dana Point Harbor
Boaters in Dana Point Harbor can expect some lanky new neighbors – ones with perpetually waving arms and shaking hips, and usually spotted dancing on top of car dealerships.

The hot-air-powered, brightly-colored characters – known as air dancers – are being deployed to the harbor’s docks to deter sea lions from making themselves at home on docks and boats, which can cause costly damage. Dana Point Marine Company, which manages Dana Point Harbor’s East Basin slips and docks for the County, is initiating this pilot program after a dramatic increase in sea lion activity over the past 18 months.

Dana Point Marina Company initiated the pilot program at the suggestion of a boater, who read about a similar program at a Northern California marina. The unusual movement of the air dancers should encourage sea lions to move on to other areas where human encounters are less likely.

The program will begin July 4 with three air dancers placed near the Harbor Patrol dock.

La Colonia Cleanup
Congratulations to the OC Public Works, Community Preservation and Code Enforcement Departments along with Waste and Recycling teams who delivered another terrific morning of community cleanup services in West Anaheim this past weekend.

Directed by Terri Cox, Chris Casillas, Tim Sun, Socorro Iglesias, Erica Carlos, Al Brady and Isabel Rios, the teams of County staff walked the La Colonia district with brochures, maps and door-hangers to advance the weekends delivery of ten 40 ft dumpster bins.

The dumpsters are spread out on local streets surrounding the Independencia Center of Garza Street so residents can drive -up or walk trash, roofing, mattresses, furniture, old bbq’s, canoes, washers, old clothes and yard waste into the bins that are paid for through state community grants.

Republic Services delivered the bins by 8 a.m. and many were full by 9 a.m. thanks to the great work by the Bolsa Grande Men’s League coordinated by ASB Director Rob Engel. Each of the 15 students deployed with County staffers to help residents pack the bins to maximize space and safety.

Goodwill teams also participated to secure reusable materials and donations and recover e-waste in old televisions, computers, printers and electronics.

Special thanks were also delivered by 4th District Policy Advisors Natalie Wieckert and Steve Spernak who joined Deputy Chief of Staff Mark Lopez to Independencia Director Rosa Renteria and Sgt. Steve Breaton from OCSD who had three Deputies stop by for a career intro to Law Enforcement to the Bolsa Grande Men’s League.

Anaheim 5k
Congratulations to the City of Anaheim, Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and the family of organizations from the Anaheim Hills community for delivering another classic 4th of July Fireworks 5 and 10K extravaganza.

The morning event, hosted at Canyon High School, drew over 1,000 attendees who ran or walked the race routes, enjoyed the run by the kids around the track then did the canopy-covered breakfast by the Anaheim Hills Rotary. The wrestling team from Canyon partnered with the Cheerleaders to put out a terrific pancake special that helped raise money for their athletic programs.

The donors, sponsors and volunteers make the most of the day with the race-route, then parade at 1 pm from Canyon HS that eventually ends at Peralta Park for fireworks and food booths for all kinds of flavors and fun into the night.

Steve Spernak attended to represent Supervisor Nelson and enjoyed the morning mixing with friends from service groups, the Chamber, city government and Wendell Walters, a director with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit support committee who raise money, Christmas gifts, welcome-home essentials for the Marines who return from overseas deployments and to provide a network of patriotic friends and support for America’s Bravest in the Marine’s stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak partnered with Wendell Walters of the 13th MEU Marine Support Council for breakfast at the 5k finish line.
