County Celebrates Groundbreaking for New OC Animal Shelter

Representatives from the County, cities and animal support groups gathered to celebrate the official groundbreaking for a new Orange County Animal Shelter in Tustin, an innovative facility that will replace the current shelter in Orange, which opened in 1941.

The County set aside $5 million to build the new shelter, slated for land on the former Tustin Marine base. Unforeseen delays intervened, leading the County earlier this year to complete a land swap with the South Orange County Community College District. The original location, which remains in the hands of the Navy, will eventually be deeded as replacement property to the college district.

Supervisor Shawn Nelson, Fourth District, commended County real estate staff and Steve Franks, director of OC Community Services, for thinking creativity and working tirelessly to create the plan for the shelter, which will be used by the County and 14 contract cities.

The Board of Supervisors in April approved up to $35 million toward construction of the new facility, roadway improvements, utilities and other upgrades. The contract cities partnering with the County are Anaheim, Brea, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Lake Forest, Orange, Placentia, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Tustin, Villa Park and Yorba Linda.

55 Freeway Improvements Coming
Last week, the OCTA Board of Directors approved a plan, labeled the modified Alternative 3, to improve SR-55, one of the county’s most congested freeways, between I-5 and I-405. OCTA will continue to work with Caltrans on the project to add new lanes in each direction, including a general purpose lane, carpool lane and merging lanes between interchanges to smooth traffic flow.

Based on this selection, staff will return to the Board at a later date with updated project cost estimates and schedules, cost-sharing arrangements, funding options and resulting budget and contract amendments. The OCTA staff report detailing the plan may be found here and a diagram comparing the alternatives of the project may be found here.

Anaheim National Night Out Against Crime
Supervisor Nelson was proud to partner with the City of Anaheim and their Police Department personnel this week as part of the National Night Out Against Crime program to support law enforcement.

Sited at Twila Reed Park on Orange, west of Beach Blvd, about 1,000 people attended the free displays and rides to enjoy the up close contact with about 20 Police Officers who brought bikes, horses, motorcycles and even landed “ Angel’ the department helicopter.

Chief Raul Quezada walked the entire venue of canopies that had volunteers and department staff while talking to citizens and handing out business cards. The spirit of respect and communications theme at the event was obvious as parents took photos of their kids hugging the horses or sitting on the motorcycles.

Supervisor Nelson’s team attends each year and 2016 was no different with Policy Advisor Steve Spernak handing out crime prevention information to protect seniors and children.

The outreach booth with the Supervisor also gives people a chance to explain issues and challenges they might have or need assistance from the County Supervisor that is conveyed to staff who work the events.

Topics included in the meet-and-greet this year focused on homeless camps in the flood control channels and sleeping on city streets or parks. This critical public policy item is worked on by the Nelson staff daily and remedies and resolutions are in the planning stages now to rectify the challenges.

Northgate Grand Opening
Northgate Market, a decades-long staple for shoppers in Anaheim and the region, proudly opened its 40th store on Wednesday, July 20, in the City where it all began. Since the first store opened in January 1980, the company has expanded beyond Orange County to Los Angeles and San Diego counties, but is still headquartered in Anaheim.

The evening before the grand opening, dignitaries and community leaders attended a VIP reception ribbon cutting to celebrate the González family’s contributions to the community and partnership with Anaheim. Following presentations by elected officials and representatives, guests were invited to sample food from several featured departments in the store, including the bakery, dairy and carniceria sections.

The newest Northgate is located at 2030 East Lincoln Avenue in Anaheim.
