County Updates
Homelessness a Concern that Keeps Growing
Securing housing for the homeless is a goal shared by everyone and Orange County is committed to finding solutions that will be both permanent and effective. However, despite devoting increased attention, resources and services to meet the challenge, homeless numbers continue to climb. As reported by the Los Angeles Times this week, “homelessness continues to outpace intensifying efforts” to combat it.

This is not a problem limited to Orange County, but rather a greater regional issue frustrating government at all levels. In fact, based on the most recent statistics, homelessness has increased in Orange County by 8% over two years while our county neighbor to the north has experienced a surge of 23% above 2016 numbers.

There will be no one solution to homelessness, just as there is no one cause for it. Should another jurisdiction solve this challenge, the County of Orange would unquestionably turn to them for guidance. Unfortunately, this is not the case, but the County has the resources to take a more comprehensive approach to continue to search for solutions for our homeless population in Orange County.

Memorial Day 2017 at Loma Vista

Supervisor Nelson presented Keynote Speaker General Dawkins with a framed copy of “America” by Abe Lincoln for speaking at Loma Vista

4,100 Veterans are buried and honored at Loma Vista Memorial Cemetery in Fullerton

Supervisor Shawn Nelson joined approximately one thousand Veterans, military families and friends at Loma Vista Memorial Cemetery to celebrate the 79th Annual Memorial Day ceremonies.

Special thanks to Ed Paul, Jeff and Marilyn Harris and their Memorial Day committee members and volunteers along with American Legion Post 142 and the American Veterans Memorial Association who put on the finest day of honoring military in OC.

The one hour program is an emotional and elegant event with Colors, Anthems, Patriotic music, roll call of the fallen, wreath presentations, and this year’s Keynote Speaker in Air Force Brigadier General James Dawkins Jr. Genera Dawkins saluted the 70th anniversary of the USAF and how they transformed from the Army Air Corps by explaining how the Air Force is the war-fighting excellence our nation expects and was built with 70 years of tenacity and innovation to be the world’s finest aviation military.

The USAF operates 5,000 aircraft and 450 ICBM and dozens of military satellites and controls the air, space and now cyberspace with skill and bravery unmatched in the 21st century.

Sincere thanks and appreciation to the hundreds of workers and flag-raisers who delivered another majestic memorial ceremony for 2017 to remember 3 centuries of Veterans interred at the Loma Vista site since the Civil War.

Brea Centennial Fun, Parades and Smiles

Supervisor Nelson shared the morning with thousands along the parade route!

The first 100 years are the hardest, but the City of Brea made it look easy when they delivered OC’s newest parade and BBQ to celebrate their 100th gala of cityhood.

Brea history goes back to cattle and sheep herds, oil rigs and fields to residential and commercial enterprises that are some of the best in OC.

The parade had been moved from earlier this year when torrential rains drowned out the idea but last weekend was something out of a movie with perfect temps and clear blue skies.

During the parade prep it looked like more people were in the parade than lining the streets but that soon changed as the 9 a.m. step-off put VIP, former Mayors, Boy Scouts, youth groups, Brea High sports teams and the USC Marching Band into full parade mode.

All said, it was planned chaos that made it so fun for the participants and the community who came out and cheered for each group on the 1.2 mile route.

Supervisor Nelson enjoyed his ride in a VW dune buggy and his office sends it thanks to Tim Takahashi of the Brea Seniors Center for the close-up photo.

Special thanks to City Manager Bill Gallardo, assistant Chris Emeterio, Kristen Steyerman and Jennifer Colacion in Community Services who managed to “herd the cats” and keep everything moving with the City’s first parade!

Congratulations and sincere appreciation to all the City of Brea staff and City Council for delivering the magic and memories at your Centennial Celebration 2017!

13th MEU Semper 5K Success!

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak (right) with 13th MEU Director Wendell Walters

Anaheim’s 13th MEU Adoption Committee supports Marines and their families year-round

Supervisor Nelson sent his congratulations to the 13th MEU Adoption Committee for delivering another terrific fundraising project with the running of their famous Semper 5k in Anaheim last week.

The committee pulled out all the stops with donors, morning coffee, marked running routes and runner support to help almost 500 participants complete their timed runs in support of the Marines and their families at Camp Pendleton.

Under the command of Wendell and Carolyn Walters, the Semper 5k is another mile-marker to raise money and support for Marines at Pendleton that provides supplemental travel, end –of –the-month groceries, care-packages, rental cars, phone cards, welcome-home baskets, new-born maternity supplies and scholarships for their kids.

Supervisor Nelson partners with Policy Advisor Steve Spernak to donate Teddy Bears that are given out at the annual Christmas party hosted by the 13th MEU on base at Camp Pendleton.

Best part of this committee, made up of former Marines, city leaders, Mayor and Julie Tait, Supervisor Nelson and 20 other civilian patriots is that every penny raised goes to the “green-cammo heroes” of the United States Marine Corps.

For information on how you can help in any capacity, please contact Carolyn Walters at caretw777@gmail.com or call (714) 637-5575 to raise money, make donations or help with logistics and operations in support of the Marines.

World Elder Abuse Prevention Rally June 17th

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak joined WEAAD planning team at Ehlers Center this week

OC Supervisor Shawn Nelson is proud to partner again this year to help deliver the premier elder abuse prevention and educational forum in Orange County with the coming WEAAD event and luncheon.

Hosted at the Ehlers Center, 8150 Knott Ave. just south of La Palma Ave, in Buena Park, the Saturday, June 17th event delivers a captivating selection of speakers and specialists who provide 20 minute segments of state-of-the-art information vital to safeguarding seniors and caregivers.

Beginning with coffee and registration at 9 a.m., those attending will enjoy the new Heritage Hall site for presentations by the Buena Park Detectives, IRS Criminal Investigations ID Theft Agents, Information Security Officers with the County of Orange and the Director of the Elder Abuse Prosecution with the San Diego District Attorney’s Office.

The forum ends with a panel of specialists who field questions on crimes, issues, con-men schemes and anti-fraud techniques. Sponsors and information booths will also provide printed hints and prevention ideas.

Years in development by professionals in the senior services industry, the Buena Park briefing is part of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day effort to safeguard seniors and elderly. This year’s planning team of Susan Papiri from SeniorServ, Karyl Dupree of St. Judes and Linda Armas of Clear Choice Senior Services produced the best 3 hour seniors training program in OC!

After the training, the entire attending seniors, sponsors, donors, staff and speakers will gather for the traditional ‘team photo’ that each will later receive copies of courtesy of Supervisor Nelson.

The “message optics” of that ‘team photo’ sends a message to criminals, hackers, financial fraud and abusers that OC seniors are trained, ready and refuse to be victims!

For more information on attending the June 17th WEAAD program, please contact Steve Spernak at Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com or call the office of OC Supervisor at (714) 834-3440.

Remembering the Fallen Peace Officers

Police Memorial at the OC Sheriff’s Academy honors the 53 Deputies, Officers and CHP killed in the line of duty

OC Supervisor Shawn Nelson and hundreds of attending members of Law Enforcement took the night to reflect on the lives of loved ones lost in the line of duty at this month’s Peace Officers Memorial honors hosted at the OC Sheriff’s Academy in Tustin.

The annual event is a remarkably elegant memorial where Motor Officers, Bagpipes, 21 Gun Salutes and Helicopter formations deliver their respects to their fallen friends and their families who suffered as they paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives protecting OC citizens.

This year, Police Chief Jerry Price of the La Habra Police Department, as Chairman of the OC Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Committee, gave the keynote speech on sacrifice and dying defending the laws of America.

Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, in her welcoming, said OC was blessed this past year by not adding a new name to the memorial wall that now names the 53 who died in OC since the 1890’s as Peace Officers Killed in the Line of Duty.

At the conclusion of ceremonies, representing Officers in the uniforms of their fallen comrades march out in single file, salute their Chiefs and the survivor-families they left behind as they walk silently into the dark and out of sight.

Supervisor Honors Trudy Levindofske

Congratulations to Antoinette Balta, Director of the Veterans Legal Institute (left) for her work with women Veterans and OC Women2Women programs

Congratulations to Trudy Levindofske (right) seen here with Judge Gail Andler at the homeless center in downtown Santa Ana

Supervisor Nelson was proud to honor one of the most exceptional women in Orange County military and Veterans projects with his Military Spirit Award presented to Trudy Levindofske at this week’s OC Women2Women Foundation Awards Night.

Presented in front of hundreds of volunteers, directors, members and supporters of the OC Women2 Women annual awards and recognitions dinner hosted at Fletcher Jones Auto in Newport Beach, Trudy was a near unanimous choice for the honor.

In addition to her command of the OC Bar Association as Executive Director she puts in hours helping the Bar Association Foundation Civic Center Homeless Legal Task Force and was an instrumental element with helping Antoinette Balta and the Veterans Legal Institute.

The Veterans Legal Institute of OC works with Veterans and delivers value-added legal counsel to women Veterans in need of housing, education, health and employment. All those services and accomplishments prompted the VLI to be supported by the OC Women2Women foundation in 2017.

Sincere best wishes and continued success to all the members, volunteers and Board of the OC Women2Women programs, Antoinette Balta at V L I, and Trudy Levindofske for the time, talents and treasures she selflessly gives to help the thousands of lives she touches and changes in Orange County!
