OC Animal Care will Waive Fees to Encourage Adoptions
Due to an abundance of dogs, cats and other animals, OC Animal Care will begin waiving fees for pets adopted by residents across Orange County.

The waiver includes all regular adoption fees with the exception of a $27 charge for rabies licensing. The waiver will remain in effect until the capacity at the shelter drops below 60 percent. The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved the Fee Waiver Resolution in 2016, which calls to forego regular adoption costs when shelter capacity reaches above 80 percent. The resolution also applies when the shelter is expecting to see a sharp increase in numbers such as that during the Fourth of July holiday.

OC Animal Care has been dealing with a busy kitten season and has seen an increase in overall intake numbers since moving into its new facility in Tustin. Numbers have hovered around an 80 percent capacity and have now reached 93 percent.

The shelter has recently been promoting adoptions to help lower the numbers by offering free cat adoptions through the “Cool Cats of Summer” promotion and free pitbull or pitbull mix adoptions through the “Pit Pit Hooray” promotion.

OC Animal Care is also encouraging animal lovers to temporarily foster a shelter pet to help ease the load during the Fourth of July holiday. The days surrounding this holiday have historically been the busiest days for OC Animal Care, with intake numbers more than doubling due to escaped and lost, frightened pets. To protect pets who may get lost, OC Animal Care is offering free pet tags every Saturday in June, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1630 Victory Road, Tustin 92782. “It’s important that pet owners know that a tag or microchip can be their pet’s ticket home” said OC Animal Care Interim Director Cymantha Atkinson.

Prescription Drop Boxes
On April 28, Supervisor Nelson partnered with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration to host a site for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This allowed residents to safely discard unwanted, unused and expired prescription medications at a secure location. While hundreds of residents were able to participate, filling over 100 boxes, there were many who could not make it and asked what other opportunities there were to do so. Over the past few months, many more residents have inquired about safely and responsibly disposing of their leftover medications. Below is a list of locations throughout Orange County.

National Drive-Thru Day – Celebrate by Clearing Space!

Have a cluttered garage or cabinets and need to free up some space? Celebrate National Drive-Thru Day with OC Waste & Recycling on Tuesday July 24.

Bring items such as e-waste, unused paints, pesticides, automotive products, batteries and more to a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center (HHWCC). After “driving thru” one of our four HHWCC’s, visitors will receive a FREE battery bucket and child’s admission coupon to Discovery Cube OC while supplies last.

When visiting, ask about the Materials Exchange Program (MEP) onsite where OC residents can choose up to five items per week from a selection of reusable household cleaners, paint, yard and car-care products.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers are located in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine and San Juan Capistrano and are free to county residents. Can’t make it on July 24? No worries, the centers are open every Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (except during rain events).

Follow @OCWaste on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for other recycling events, tips and promotions. For more information visit oclandfills.com or call 714-834-4000

Anaheim 4th of July 5k and Parade
The day starts early at the annual Fireworks 5k at Canyons High School where hundreds of runners and walkers enjoy the morning fun running the annual 5K and campus track to kick-off the 4th of July.

The Anaheim Hills Firecracker 5k/10k/Run-Walk began just after 7 a.m to start the day’s activities behind the work, staff and planning of Anaheim Chamber Director Heather Sievers.

Delicious pancake breakfasts are served by kids and coaches from Canyon High School Wrestling Team and after a few cups of hot coffee visitors stay to enjoy the kids run and Yankee Doodle Dog Show.

The parade and participants staged in the upper lot at Canyon HS at noon with a 1 p.m. step-off for bands, civic groups, Miss Anaheim and her court, Boy Scouts carrying a huge flag and self-made floats of flags and Americana.

Supervisor Nelson, represented by Policy Advisor Steve Spernak, continued the eight year tradition of pancakes and pictures with friends and sponsors who later walked in the parade and enjoyed the patriotic music and waves of hundreds of Anaheim residents lined along Santa Ana Canyon Blvd.

Congratulations to the City of Anaheim staffers and community events crews and Heather Sievers with the Chamber who partnered with the Police and Fire Departments to make this a fun and fantastic celebration of America’s birthday and celebrating 242 years of freedom!

Anaheim Chamber Director Heather Sievers joins Policy Advisor Steve Spernak at the Fireworks 5k fun at Canyon HS.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak represented Supervisor Nelson and enjoyed a perfect parade day in Anaheim with event sponsors, friends and patriots enjoying the holiday festivities.

Thank you, Canyon High School Wrestling, for the traditional coffee and pancakes that fed hundreds to kickoff the 4th of July morning fun.
