1st Annual Prostate Cancer Community Bike Event
What an incredible day it was at our first-ever Prostate Cancer Awareness Community Bike Event with OneLegacy and the City of Placentia! Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide. When caught early, it’s highly treatable. Families, friends, and neighbors from around the Fourth District came together to pedal for a purpose and spread awareness. We rode in unity around Tri-City Regional Park and parts of the Cities of Placentia and Fullerton to spread the message of the importance of early prostate cancer detection. The event was not just about biking; it was about coming together, having fun, and building connections. County agencies and local nonprofits also set up booths at the event and provided information on healthcare services and resources to attendees. Thank you to our amazing community for showing up with enthusiasm and solidarity. And we send a special thank you to our partners, vendors, and Orange County Parks for helping to make this event a success. Together, we're making a difference to combat prostate cancer. District 4 Older Adults Needs Assessment Resource Fair
On September 25, we held a District 4 Older Adults' Needs Assessment Resource Fair at the Brookhurst Community Center. With the senior population growing in Orange County, it’s essential for us to proactively plan to meet their needs. The survey asks about their greatest needs and concerns about aging, including important topics like housing, transportation, remaining safely at home and caregiving. Attendees at the Resource Fair completed the survey, had a chance to meet with representatives from various organizations, and learned about important health resources from CalOptima Health. Thank you to our attendees, community organizations, and CalOptima Health for participating. And we thank the County CEO’s Office, Advance OC, the Orange County Office on Aging, the County of Orange Social Services Agency, and Orange County Health Care Agency for helping us organize the event. If you know a family member or friend in Orange County who is 55 or older or a caregiver, share the information about the survey, which takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

100th Anniversary of John Wayne Airport
My Board colleagues and I celebrated the 100th anniversary of John Wayne Airport with Airport Director Charlene Reynolds. Our Orange County Airport has been a prime destination for aviators, entrepreneurs, and travelers. It helps residents and visitors build new memories with their family and friends, with reunions made at the Airport terminals and adventures launched on the runway. From its humble beginnings as a rural landing strip, the Orange County Airport has grown into a leader in aviation in travel. This year the Airport was designated the second best largest hub airport in the country by JD Power. Congratulations all the Airport staff, tenants, stakeholders and community members for working to make our Orange County Airport a success!

Listening Sessions for CalOptima Health Health Care Workforce Development Initiative
After seeing the success of the CalOptima Health Master of Social Worker (MSW) Stipend Program, my CalOptima Health Board of Director colleagues and I approved a $50 million investment in June 2023 towards closing the gap in Orange County’s health care workforce. The CalOptima Health Workforce Development Initiative aims to increase access to high-quality, equitable care for our members by investing in workforce development initiatives over five years. We continue to seek stakeholder input to identify workforce shortages and opportunities for grant investments to help increase the health care workforce in Orange County. CalOptima Health will host three stakeholder listening sessions in October to obtain stakeholder input into the design of the initiative. Please click on the links below to register in advance to share your thoughts at one of these listening sessions: For questions about the initiative or listening sessions, please email strategicdevelopment@caloptima.org.

OCTA Fourth District Mayors Forum
I participated in a round table discussion at the Fullerton Community Center with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and local Mayors and City Managers to discuss the Fourth District's transportation needs and priorities. We continue to see growth in the Fourth District and investing in transportation infrastructure, including road repairs, bridge maintenance, and the development of transportation corridors is necessary to accommodate growth. Some of the topics discussed included the 405 Improvement Project, Free Transit Programs such as OCTA's Youth Ride Free program, and OCTA’s efforts to encourage safety practices when using micro-mobility options such as e-bikes.

Cal Optima Health and Community Action Partnership Press Event
Last week, I attended a press conference with Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAP OC) and CalOptima Health to recognize the amazing work that is being done to combat homelessness and housing insecurity. By utilizing CalOptima Health’s $177,543 grant, CAP OC was able to refurbish and rehabilitate two low-income housing units that they own. At the press conference, we were able to hear from Eduardo Sanchez, a beneficiary of the program. His story highlights the importance for all government entities and community organizations to collaborate and help provide the wrap-around services needed for clients. Housing stability can create positive health outcomes, and it’s why we have been dedicated to expanding housing opportunities to those in need. Thank you to CAP OC and CalOptima Health for your ingenuity and for investing in healthcare as housing initiative.

Orange County Sustainability Decathlon
Yesterday my policy Advisors Jesus and Emma attended the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. During the event, they were able to to hear information regarding the challenges we face regarding climate change and the proposed solutions community members have created to address them. At the event, they were able to visit 10 model homes built by university teams that demonstrate the team's vision of what a sustainable home will look like. They were able to visit the Cal State Fullerton team and learn more about their project. Their submission included examples of how current homes are built versus sustainable homes, with their model providing better temperature control inside the house during the summer and winter. The main goal of the event is to challenge the student teams to create homes that address California's environmental and housing needs by creating affordable homes that can leave less carbon emissions and withstand the future climate impacts. Congrats to all the teams on their great work!

Pet of the Week
Late in the evening, OC Animal Care (OCAC)'s team received a call from a concerned individual about a distressed cat. Our Animal Control Officer promptly responded and found Penelope, a 12-year-old Siamese cat, in extremely poor health, left alone in a parking lot. Penelope was rushed to a clinic to receive the care she needed. After her recovery, Penelope found a home with a companion cat. However, she was shortly returned when it was discovered she preferred to be the only pet in the home. Back at the shelter, OCAC's staff and volunteers have been working diligently to help Penelope emerge from her shy shell. She will need patient, understanding adopters who will work with her to build confidence, gain trust, and heal from the trauma she experienced while on the streets. With some extra TLC, we are hopeful this amazing girl can blossom in her new home! If you would like to give Penelope another deserving chance of a forever home, please call (714) 935-6848 and mention Animal ID A1131981.
