Laguna Beach: Caltrans PCH Construction

Construction by Caltrans will continue through May 24 on a project to improve the intersection of 7th Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Laguna Beach.

The project involves building American with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps and sidewalk, relocating controller cabinet, and upgrading the traffic signals at the intersection.

The shoulders and one lane on PCH will be closed from 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday. The project is expected to be completed before Memorial Day.

Caltrans appreciates the public’s patience while they perform this work. Portable Message Signs will notify drivers of closures and work times. Additionally, construction updates will be available via Twitter @CaltransOC and Facebook.com/CaltransOC.

The work schedule is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials, and/or construction-related issues. For more information, please contact the District 12 Public Information Office at 657-328-6000.

RSM's Griffin Canning Debuts with the Angels!
South County's Griffin Canning makes his debut with the Angels!

On April 30, one of our Fifth District constituents and OC Public Works employees, Kevin Canning, got to watch his son, Griffin, during his pitching debut for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim! Griffin Canning graduated from Santa Margarita High School in RSM and went on to pitch for the UCLA Bruins.

At his debut with the Angels, Griffin did an outstanding job leading the team to victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. He even received a standing ovation after departing the game after 4½ innings. I know Kevin is proud of his son, and we are, too!

Congratulations to the Canning family, as we look forward to watching Griffin's career progress. Read more about Griffin's Angels debut here.

May Proclaimed Foster Care Month in The OC

At this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, I was pleased to present a Board Resolution declaring May as Foster Care Month, highlighting the significant need for the community to get involved in order to provide loving homes for foster youth.

Presenting a Board Resolution declaring May as Foster Care Month.

The resolution was presented to leaders of our Social Services Agency (SSA) for their efforts to recruit qualified foster families, also known as resource families. The Board also honored local resource parents Melissa and Andrew Ferguson at the meeting.

In Orange County, there are more than 2,000 children and youth in foster care. Brighter outcomes are achieved when children have opportunities to grow and develop in a family setting. To that end, we are committed to ensuring children are placed in family-based care whenever possible. For more information, click here.

Mello wins ACC-OC 2019 Golden Hub Award
Mello wins the ACC-OC 2019 Golden Hub Award.

This week, Mello, our online property tax application built in collaboration with Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich and our Orange County Information Technology Application Team, received a Golden Hub Innovation Award from the Association of California Cities - Orange County (ACC-OC)! The award was in the Technology and E-Government Category.

I am always looking for new and innovative ways to make our government more efficient and accessible to our residents. Mello is just one example of this. This web-based application allows you to enter your address and see where every cent of your property taxes goes and even shows a breakdown of any Mello-Roos fees!

I want to thank ACC-OC for presenting us with this award, as well as Orange County Realtors for their nomination and continued support. As always, I look forward to continue working on innovative ways to make our government more efficient and transparent.

Emergency Training to Save Kitten Lives

OC Animal Care is hosting two emergency training sessions April 28 to teach interested foster volunteers how to bottle feed kittens. Kittens will be on hand for volunteers to practice bottle feeding at the two training sessions set for 10 AM and 2 PM at OC Animal Care, 1630 Victory Road in Tustin.

As of April 23, more than 750 kittens under two months of age made their way to OC Animal Care. Each arriving litter of kittens need someone who can care for and feed them every two to four hours until they have grown to at least two pounds and are ready adoption.

Staff relies almost entirely on the generous members of our community who are willing to foster these young kittens in their own homes and provide the love and attention needed until they are old enough to be adopted. Without these volunteers, OC Animal Care is significantly limited on the number of kittens that can be saved and given the chance to live a full and happy life.

Staff is looking for long- or short-term Guardian Fosters to join the program and help save the lives of the most vulnerable population in the shelter. Guardian Foster homes offer short-term placement for kittens who come in late in the day and need additional time to find long-term placement.

OC Animal Care also reminds the public to Wait, Watch, Win! The best way to combat the influx of kittens into the shelter is to leave kittens who are safe with their mom until they are eating on their own or are at least five weeks of age. This gives the kittens a better chance of survival.
